Are you at least 55 and interested in helping older adults deal with aging issues? English- and Spanish-speaking volunteers provide one-to-one weekly counseling to clients in their homes, helping them cope with challenges of aging. Senior Peer Counselors provide emotional support and practical resources to help comfort and empower clients The ideal volunteer is compassionate, understanding, and has an interest in his or her own personal growth. Training is required and is provided periodically. It covers basic counseling skills, issues of aging, and community resources. Volunteers attend weekly interactive Senior Peer team meetings in San Rafael, CA faciliated by a Health and Human Services Department staff member.

Description
MarinShares: Marin County Volunteers connects volunteers with a dynamic range of opportunities made possible through the workings of the county. The MarinShares program -- originally Civic Center Volunteers -- serves County of Marin departments at the Civic Center in San Rafael, CA, and area offices in Novato, Lucas Valley, east San Rafael, and beyond. Volunteer sites include library branches, fire lookout towers, open space trails, parks, Sheriff's facilities, and more. The program was started by the Marin County Board of Supervisors in 1979, so volunteers have enhanced county services for 40 years. Last year, volunteers and interns served more than 250,000 hours.
