Park Information:

Located approximately 20 miles northwest of center city Philadelphia, Valley Forge was the site of the 1777-78 winter encampment of George Washington and the Continental Army. The park commemorates the sacrifices and perseverance of the Revolutionary War generation and honors the ability of citizens to pull together and overcome adversity during extraordinary times.   • Learn a wide range of subjects through complementary training opportunities (e.g., history, natural resources, fire extinguisher training, safety, etc.).
  • Develop knowledge and skills necessary to protect the natural environment.
  • Learn how to identify and control targeted non-native invasive plants.
  • Learn how to plant and care for native plants.
  • Learn Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques used by the park to suppress non-native species.
  • Participate one time and receive a Weed Warriors button, participate three times and earn a Weed Warriors t-shirt.
  • Be eligible for the National Park Service (NPS) Volunteers-in-Parks (VIP) perks (e.g., The Volunteer Pass to federal lands and recreation sites).
  • Be eligible for the Valley Forge National Historical Park (VF NHP) VIP perks (e.g., annual appreciation programs, etc.).
  • Deepen your appreciation of Valley Forge National Historical Park, each of our key partners, and how we collaborate to steward this land and its stories.


Short Term Impact of this Work:

  • Habitat improvement for birds, pollinators, and plants. Visitors feel welcomed and receive the information they need to enjoy the park.


Long Term Impact of this Work:

  • Increase in indigenous biodiversity. Visitors feel inspired to return to the park again and/or inquire about stewardship opportunities .


Time Commitment:

Volunteers must be willing to work at least 2 hours per shift. Inclement weather may result in cancellation or postponement. Contact Kate (kate_jensen@nps.gov; 610 783 1035) to sign up for specific dates.
