Students who are strong readers by the end of third grade are positioned to be strong learners the rest of their lives. But in the United States, more than half our students reach fourth grade without learning to read proficiently. Together, we can change this! The amazing thing about our program - we train ordinary people to make an incredible impact as tutors.

Thousands of California kids need help in reading and you can make all the difference. Offer your time and talent as a tutor and be more for students in schools in California.

As an Elementary Literacy Tutor, you’ll help students in kindergarten through third grade to become better readers. With great training and on-site coaching, we’ll prepare you to work one-on-one to help kids develop their reading skills and confidence! Students make the most progress when you are there, so our tutors serve during school hours, on school campuses, and are needed for the whole school year.

We are currently recruiting for the 2022-23 school year. Service will begin in August 2022. Service commitment lasts through June 18, 2023.

This is an AmeriCorps member position with California Reading Corps. Although the earnings are modest, the rewards are great! You’ll join an amazing group of California tutors, determined to help students be more.
