El Malpais Visitor Center Volunteer - RV

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

El Malpais National Monument is recruiting a volunteer to assist with visitor center operations during June, July, and August at one of New Mexico's hidden gem parks! This position offers a free RV pad at a private RV park across from the visitor center, so interested volunteers must have their own RV.

The richly diverse volcanic landscape of El Malpais (el-mal-pie-EES) offers solitude, recreation, and adventure. El Malpais National Monument consists of 114,748 acres of lava fields, cinder cones, lava tubes, ice caves, sculptured sandstone formations, and ponderosa, pinon and juniper forests. Approximately 85% of the park (97,000 acres) is managed as wilderness. Ancestral Puebloans lived on the edges of the lava and forged paths deep into the heart of the lava fields in search of water and food. Today, Pueblo and Navajo people still hold rich ties to this wild landscape. While some may see a desolate environment, people have been adapting to and living in this extraordinary terrain for generations. Come discover the land of fire and ice!
