ORGANIZATION: USDA Forest Service

The Sitka Ranger District is seeking an experienced volunteer host or host couple for the Starrigavan Recreation Area located 7 miles north of Sitka and within 1 mile of the Alaska Marine Highway ferry terminal. The recreation area operates year round and includes the campground, 7 restrooms, a recreation rental cabin, artesian well and 2 trailheads.


Host(s) must enjoy working with the public and being visible within the recreation area; in good health and physical condition; be self-directed requiring little supervision; possess a valid driver's license to operate a government vehicle and UTV; commit to volunteering full time for that dates specified.


The volunteer service period runs from about May 16 through about September 9. Applicants may be subject to a possible background check as hosts handle sensitive information and have access to the police frequency on Forest Service issued radio.


Volunteer(s) will arrange and pay for their travel to Sitka, Alaska. Volunteer(s) will be reimbursed for vehicle and passenger fare (including cabin berth) on the Alaska Marine Highway (AMH) from Sitka to Bellingham, WA or Haines, AK in September after completion of volunteer assignment. Ferry schedules are posted at http://dot.alaska.gov/amhs/ . In lieu of reimbursement for marine travel, volunteer(s) will be reimbursed for return airfare to an international airport nearest their residence. Host(s) will be eligible for a nominal daily subsistence reimbursement $15/day while volunteering in Sitka. Host(s) must commit to serve in Sitka for the specified dates above to qualify for certain reimbursements.


Lodging and associated utilities are provided to the volunteer in the host cabin within the Starrigavan Recreation Area. The cabin includes furnace, electric range top and oven, microwave, refrigerator, television, internet, washer and dryer, all necessary living room, bedroom and dining furniture, dishware and basic kitchen utensils, cookware, cleaning supplies, and a phone. There is no dishwasher or wood stove in the cabin.
