Career Mentor: Support a New American Refugee Youth in their Goals

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: GLOBAL FC

Did you have a mentor in your life who helped you get to where you are today? Many first generation immigrant and refugee youth do not have natural mentors who can network with them and teach them how to be successful in America.

Global FC is matching refugee students with caring and professional adults who can listen, support, and provide meaningful opportunities and experience. Through the mentoring relationship, students develop and enhance the skills, knowledge, attitudes, and connections they need to effectively transition from high school into post-secondary education, trade schools, or entry-level professional success. This includes activities such as career exploration, personal evaluation of interests, aptitudes and skills, workforce opportunities, application and interviewing skills, internship opportunities, and college preparation.

Career mentors do not make decisions for the youth, but rather provide support and resources/tools for the youth's decisions and break down steps to accomplishing those goals.

Mission Statement

Global FC exists to bridge diverse cultures to come together, forming just communities where all are free to be fully-known and fully-loved in pursuit of their God-given purpose and potential. Mission: Global FC uses soccer as a vehicle for transformative impact.

Description

Global FC was founded by first generation refugee, Mariya Goodbrake, and primarily serves first generation immigrant and refugee youth in the northeast neighborhoods of Kansas City, Missouri using soccer as our tool for transformation. We support youth with the tools to overcome obstacles to success by providing resources, opportunities, and relationships towards a brighter future. We accomplish this through our three areas of programming: Soccer, Education and Mentoring.

Our holistic approach harnesses the power of relationships to reduce youth violence and family conflict, strengthen communities, inspire academic success, promote health and wellness and to create mentorship chains.
