INTRODUCTION

Mi Casa Resource Center is seeking volunteers to help members of our community build their language skills in our English as a Second Language (ESL) course.

English as a Second Language (ESL) is a twelve-week course designed to help non-native English speakers build the confidence and fluency they need to communicate effectively in academic, professional, and social settings. Classes are in person, with levels one, two, and three offered concurrently.

PROJECT DETAILS

ESL instructors work as a team with the help of teaching assistants to provide a mix of large-group instruction, small-group support, and one-on-one tutoring. All curriculum and materials are provided by the organization.

Instructors are primarily responsible for delivering the daily lesson plan. Duties include mastering the curriculum and class materials, leading out on large-group instruction, and managing class progress throughout the duration of the course.

Responsibilities include:

  • Using a variety of teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles.
  • Encouraging student participation and building confidence in language use.
  • Providing constructive feedback to help students improve.
  • Offering guidance on pronunciation, grammar, and cultural nuances.
  • Encouraging peer interaction and practice through group activities.
  • Communicating with program coordinators and other staff members.

SESSION AND CLASS DETAILS

ESL Fall Session

  • August 26th November 11th, Tuesdays, 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM
  • August 28th - November 13th, Thursdays, 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM

QUALIFICATION AND COMMITMENT DETAILS

Teaching experience is preferred, and instructors should be able to engage respectfully and warmly with adult students from a multicultural background. Spanish-language skills are highly useful.

Classes are offered two times per week and once during the weekend. Instructors will be asked to commit to serving at one class consistently per week for most weeks of the session. Notice can be given for travel or other planned commitments.
