Be a force for good, and really help people...while working alone in peace and quiet! This volunteer job is ideal for someone who is 100% reliable, takes initiative, prefers to work alone, and enjoys making a valuable contribution "behind the scenes".

Hint: Need a job reference that speaks to your ability to work independently and unsupervised? Happiest when you're literally in the driver's seat or caring for vehicles? This is your gig.

Once a month, the 2000 Honda Odyssey van used in our mobile soup kitchen and the 2002 Toyota Sienna van used for grocery distribution both need a good going-over and deep cleaning. TheVehicle Maintenance Manager (aka The CTH Gearhead) -- we hope that's you! -- does the following:
  • takes a hard look at the tires, the brake lights, the bumpers and determines next steps if action is needed
  • test drives the van on highways and side streets
  • takes the van to be washed and vacuumed
  • fills the tank
  • (as needed) takes it to a shop for maintenance or repair work.

It’s fabulous to have the same person do this each month, so that changes to the vehicle are noticed and any repairs are promptly arranged. People with auto repair skills and/or who are knowledgeable about maintenance are obviously appreciated, but this is not at all required. You do not need be old enough to remember Car Talk, the radio show in which Click and Clack diagnosed car trouble from the wacky descriptions of people who called-in, prepared for a big lesson in humility. (But if you are that old, we won't hold it against you.)

You do need a valid and current California driver’s license as well as a clean driving record.

What / Who is Consider The Homeless? We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit, local grassroots organization in Berkeley, CA that is 100% volunteer -- there are no paid staff. All donations directly fund our programs. Consider the Homeless! delivers food and survival supplies to unhoused Berkeley residents living on the street, in their car, or in an encampment. Unlike other services for the homeless, we do not require that people find their way to us. We go to them, and we meet them where they are...literally and figuratively. We have two primary programs: 1) A mobile soup kitchen that delivers hot, homemade soup with bread and survival supplies in the evening every Thursday and Sunday, rain or shine. 2) During the pandemic, we've also been providing grocery bags of non-perishable, ready-to-eat foods & drinking water to about 80 people on both Mondays and Fridays.

Mission Statement

CONSIDER THE HOMELESS! A small yet dedicated group of neighbors and friends who seek to alleviate the suffering of Berkeley’s homeless, our brothers and sisters who are living and sleeping on the streets of our fair city. Our goal is to offer whatever help we can to those living on the streets - beginning with the basic need for food. We strive to warm their bellies and their hearts while offering what we have, with a simple greeting and a smile. There is no hidden agenda. We gain their trust as we respect their privacy and we always treat them with the utmost respect.
