Volunteers should be prepared for a variety of weather conditions. Weather on the Oregon Coast can be cool and windy even in the peak of the summer. Strong winds, high tides, and sneaker waves are all considered job hazards for this position. Due to the consistent interaction with beach goers with a variety of recreational interests, volunteers may have to navigate occasional difficult interactions with members of the public. Ideal candidates have a history of working with the public or education in some capacity.
