Join the Texas Trail Tamers on a McKittrick Canyon Trail Project from Feb 13-19, 2022, with direction guided by the Guadalupe Mountains Trail Crew. Work will take place between Pratt Cabin along the trail towards the Grotto, and on to the Notch and McKittrick Canyon Campground as time allows. Work done will be trail brushing and other basic trail maintenance work. The trail was affected by the rains that fell during Monsoon Season 2021, and this project is to correct some of the subsequent overgrowth and minor trail damage. Other trail projects may be done depending on time, experience of the group, and weather/environmental conditions.
Tools used will include loppers, handsaws, shovels, and rakes (equipment and training provided by NPS). Expect to hike 5-8 miles everyday, carrying all the water, lunch, snacks, and tools you will need for each work day. Hiking is over decently flat, but rocky terrain, and work will be strenuous.
The group will be staying in a group campsite outside of McKittrick Canyon. You will need to provide all of your own food and camping equipment. Camping area will have electricity, water, an outhouse, and limited access to a shower. Weather in mid-February can be cold and very windy.
Group will arrive Sunday February 13th, work will take place on Feb 14/15/16/17th from 8am-4pm, free day on February 18th, and leave the park on February 19th.
