Interested in food justice? Volunteers know what goes on behind the scenes at the White Center Food Bank, and are critical to ensuring that our community is able to access the food they need. Support is needed in our free grocery store (food distribution) and the duties described below can vary depending on the time of day, Monday through Friday, one is available to support our work.

  • Support distribution as a grocery store clerk (bagging food, cart return, carrying out food, restocking shelves, light cleaning and sanitizing, assisting customers with questions)
  • Help to set up food distribution for the community
  • Help clean up and restock after distribution is over
  • Help to unload, weigh, and record donations
  • Interact in a kind and culturally appropriate way with the community
  • Represent the food bank in a professional manner
Shifts are available, but differ by day. Most volunteers help us weekly for 2-4 hours, but we encourage you to reach out if your schedule doesn't match our shifts below.

Monday Shifts (the grocery store is open 12-3:45pm)
  • 11:45am-2pm
  • 1:45-4pm

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday Shifts (the grocery store is open 10am-1:45pm)
  • 9:45am-12pm
  • 11:45am-2pm

If you would like to help with set up and or clean up, you can add on a shift before the grocery store opens, or after it closes to pair with a half shift in the grocery store!

Description

White Center Food Bank provides food access to Washington state residents for no fee. COVID-19 severely altered our daily operations, resulting in a need for more volunteers to support our work than we had needed before (by pivoting to outside food distribution). We continue to operate in our new, pandemic-safe model, and see the high need from our community continue.

The White Center Food Bank began in the mid-1970’s as an emergency response to assist struggling families and individuals in the greater White Center and Highline areas during a major economic downturn. Much like today, many in the community were facing difficult economic conditions that left them in need of food resources.

In 1982 the White Center Emergency Food Association was formally incorporated and is today known as the White Center Food Bank, serving 57,989 individuals (19,569 families) in 2017. Current programs include daytime and seniors-only food distributions; a mobile food bank for seniors and disabled clients; a Baby Pantry for diapers and formula; culturally relevant food grown onsite; cultural foods buying program; and grocery rescue. Intake services are provided in five languages, and all written materials are provided in six languages.
