Fort Pulaski National Monument lies eighteen miles east of Savannah, Georgia. The monument encompasses 5000 acres of marshland on McQueen’s Island and 600 acres of dry land on Cockspur Island. The park’s primary resource is the nineteenth century masonry fortification. Built between 1829 and 1847 to defend Savannah, Fort Pulaski saw action during the Civil War. Other historic resources in the park include the ruins of a small village and wharf, an 1890s era concrete battery, and a small lighthouse. Cockspur Island also provides recreational opportunities for trail walking, birding, bicycling, fishing, and more, while McQueen’s island is popular for boating and fishing.
Fort Pulaski National Monument is seeking dependable volunteers to assist with park grounds care. Grounds care volunteers help keep the grounds surrounding historic Fort Pulaski beautiful for hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world.
