WHAT WILL YOU DO?


Backcountry Volunteer will spend half of their time in the Gila Wilderness assessing trail and water conditions, sharing LNT principles, conducting basic trail maintenance, and interacting with the public. The other half of the time the volunteer will be at the Gila Visitor Center or Cliff Dwellings sharing up-to-data backcountry information. The schedule will be 4 days in the backcountry, 3 days off, 4 days at the visitor center and trail head, and then starting over again for a 3 month period with possible extension to 6 month.


Applicants should possess professional experience and skills in the following areas: hiking, backpacking, map and compass, medical training. Applicants should be able to hike up to 20 miles a day over rugged and rough terrain which includes several water crossings. Applicant should have experience hiking and backpacking and will be asked to supply their own well-maintained gear.
