Hospice is a framework of care that provides comfort and support for patients and their families as they near the end of life's journey. During the course of certain illnesses, when the patient, doctor and family decide that aggressive curative treatment is no longer appropriate, hospice strives to optimize the quality of life and bring comfort and support.
One of the best ways Torrance Memorial Hospice provides comfort and support to our families is through our volunteer program. We are looking for members of our community to help with patient visits, bereavement support and office work. Our volunteers sit with patients and provide companionship by reading to them, playing music, puzzling, playing games, going for a walk or helping with errands etc. We also have an End-of-Life Doula program where our volunteers help our team support families while their loved one is transitioning. We strive to provide volunteers when there is no family available so none of our patients die alone. We have a bereavement program that supports our families by providing weekly support groups and bereavement phone calls for 13 months after their loved one dies. Volunteers can also support our program by helping with mailings, data entry and other office duties. Volunteers are essential to hospice and the heart of our program.
