ORGANIZATION: Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center

If you love to learn and enjoy connecting with a diverse group of people this may be the position for you! As a gallery docent you will share information about the aquarium’s exhibits and Virginia’s marine environment with visitors. Candidates must have above average communication skills, be comfortable with large crowds and interacting with children. Applicants with an interest in conservation or marine biology are ideal. This is also a great opportunity home schooled teens, retired educators, or individuals involved in education.

Following training, a minimum commitment of one 3½ hour shift a week for one year is required. Interested? Adults, complete Virginia Aquarium's adult application.

3 Shifts

  • 08:30 AM to 12:30 PM
  • 10:30 AM to 02:00 PM
  • 10:30 AM to 05:00 PM

The mission of the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center is to inspire conservation of the marine environment through education, research and sustainable practices.

Description

The Aquarium showcases Virginia’s diverse and unique marine environment. The 89 acre campus includes: two exhibit buildings; a one-third-mile long nature trail; Virginia native gardens; an aviary with over 30 species; 3D theater; gallons of aquariums; 360 interactive exhibits; live animal habitats and two touch pools. The animal collection of approximately 12,000 represents over 700 species. Seasonal boat trips, as well as premium behind the scene exhibits add a deeper dimension to guest visits.

In recent years, the Aquarium's research and conservation efforts have grown. The Virginia Aquarium was the first certified Green Attraction in the Commonwealth. It has also taken the lead by hosting e-cycling events and developing a Sensible Seafood program. The organization is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks & Aquariums (AMMPA).
