Mission Statement

The mission of the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center is to inspire conservation of the marine environment through education, research and sustainable practices.

Description

The Aquarium showcases Virginia’s diverse and unique marine environment. The 89 acre campus includes: two exhibit buildings; a one-third-mile long nature trail; Virginia native gardens; an aviary with over 30 species; 3D theater; gallons of aquariums; 360 interactive exhibits; live animal habitats and two touch pools. The animal collection of approximately 12,000 represents over 700 species. Seasonal boat trips, as well as premium behind the scene exhibits add a deeper dimension to guest visits.

In recent years, the Aquarium's research and conservation efforts have grown. The Virginia Aquarium was the first certified Green Attraction in the Commonwealth. It has also taken the lead by hosting e-cycling events and developing a Sensible Seafood program. The organization is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks & Aquariums (AMMPA).

My daughter and I enjoy participating in community clean up events, and we enjoyed helping clean up around the aquarium. We would definitely do this again.
