ORGANIZATION: Volunteer Polk

  • 5 people are interested

The Helping HANDS program is offering an internship with their program that includes administrative duties, shadowing of staff, and exposure to individuals with mental illness and substance abuse disorders. This internship is for the length of one semester. If completing this internship for academic credit, all required documents must be provided prior to your first scheduled day.

Interns will help to prepare agendas, minutes, reports, and presentations. Additionally, interns will attend Forensic Intensive Case Management staff meetings and Helping HANDS staff meetings and become familiar with the Polk County Sequential Intercept Map (SIM). Interns may shadow staff on visits to the jail or ride-along with Community Paramedic and/or Peer Specialists. This individual should be prepared to encounter individuals with mental illness and substance abuse disorders.

Helping HANDS is a jail transition program that focuses on healthcare access, navigation, delivery and support for Polk County inmates returning to the community from jail. The program focuses on inmates who have had two or more arrests in the past 12 months and are receiving psychotropic medications while in jail. Referrals to the program come from the jail or community partners. Participation is voluntary, not court ordered.
