Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA)

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

Help us accomplish our mission by providing presentations about Medicare coverage and Medicare fraud to people in your local community!

SHIBA Medicare presenters make 5 to 60 minute presentations using SHIBA-approved materials and scripts. The audiences include Medicare beneficiaries, their caregivers and/or other members of the public who want to learn more about the SHIBA program, Medicare topics and the national effort to educate Medicare beneficiaries on how to prevent, detect and report fraud, errors and abuse in the health care system. SHIBA presentations also include an opportunity for Q & A with the audience about covered topics and information.

SHIBA Medicare presenters receive training on the basics of Medicare benefits, Medicare fraud, errors, abuse and current scams. They also receive training on making group presentations and presentation skills.

Note: During the pandemic, our presenters make most presentations via Zoom and when in person, participants must be vaccinated and masked.

5000 Capitol Blvd SE, PO BOX 40225, Olympia, WA 98504, US

Mission Statement

SHIBA provides free, unbiased information about health care coverage and access to help improve the lives of all Washington state residents. We cultivate community commitment through partnership, service and volunteering.

Description

A free service of the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner, SHIBA volunteers provide unbiased and confidential Medicare counseling and outreach services.

One of 54 state health insurance programs (SHIP) in the U.S., SHIBA was the very first program in the nation. We’ve been in operation since 1979.

Our 200 volunteers are located across the state. We contract/partner statewide with local non-profit organizations to provide outreach and counseling services to serve all 39 Washington state counties.

Why volunteer for SHIBA?
You can make a difference in the life of a senior citizen or someone with a disability by helping them understand Medicare and the choices available to them. And we will provide you with training all about Medicare.
