Quick Overview: Help end food waste by collecting donated produce from farmer's market vendors at one of our participating farmers markets across Los Angeles. We are looking for a volunteer or group of volunteers to commit weekly to glean produce from the market. Volunteers will need to be comfortable walking the market and lifting boxes approximately 40lbs. Volunteers must use their personal vehicle to transport food.
Impact: 1 in 7 people and 1 in 5 children are food insecure in Los Angeles county. COVID-19 is putting even more people at risk of going hungry, with lines at local food banks increasing significantly. Now more than ever, we need new volunteers that can deliver food to our neighbors in need. This year, we are on track to diverting nearly 4 million pounds of food away from landfills to neighboring communities because of dedicated volunteers.
Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities:
Source cardboard boxes prior to the market.
Arrive at farmers market prior to closing time.
Visit each vendor to ask for donations
Weigh donations and provide a receipt
Collect donations
Transport donations
Coordinate a meetup time and location with the pickup agency
Submit weights and receipts via app within same day
Requirements: Volunteers will need to
source their own cardboard boxes to hold the produce
bring a wagon or cart
have a phone to communicate with the pickup agency
able to walk long distances
able to lift 40 lbs
Additional Information:
VOLUNTEER FOOD SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
Abide by business mask requirements
Wear gloves when handling loose, unpackaged foods
Use hand sanitizer or wipes to keep your hands clean
Observe Food Safety measures from the Food Safety Quiz
