WHAT: We're looking for volunteers to help us end food waste in Los Angeles by delivering extra food from grocery stores, restaurants, bakeries, etc to soup kitchens and food pantries! We do all the prep work to help you be successful, we just need people like YOU to pick the food up and drop it off! ABOUT FOODCYCLE LA: FoodCycle LA is committed to sourcing food supplies for local food banks and is coordinating donations from grocery stores, restaurants, warehouses, and other businesses to be dispersed to various partner non-profits, who in turn get that food in the hands of those most in need. We've paired up with the #CAClimateActionCorps and #CaliforniaVolunteers to help the state meet it's goals in reducing food waste in the Golden State and you can help too! VOLUNTEER RESPONSIBILITIES: After signing up, you will input your location and availability in an app called Careit (this is where you will take a food safety quiz as well to help keep everyone safe.) Careit will help you find food runs with delivery times that work for you. Food donations should total no more than 50 pounds. IMPACT: 1 in 7 people and 1 in 5 children are food insecure in Los Angeles county. COVID-19 has put even more people at risk of going hungry, with lines at local food banks increasing significantly. Because of the pandemic, volunteers we used to rely on can no longer assist us since so many of them are in an at-risk age group. Now more than ever, we need new volunteers that can deliver food to our neighbors in need. If this food makes it to a landfill, it will rot and produce methane a very potent greenhouse gas. YOU can play a role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by keeping this food out of landfills and reducing food insecurity in your own community! REQUIREMENTS: Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and have a reliable car with a valid driver's license and auto insurance. REQUIREMENTS TO VOLUNTEER DURING COVID-19: You must: not have been or felt sick in the last 2 weeks not been near anyone who has been or felt sick in the last 2 weeks bring your own mask and hand sanitizer SPECIAL SAFETY PROCEDURES DURING COVID-19: All volunteers must wear masks at all times. You must wash your hands at the beginning and end of the volunteer activity, and any time after touching your face. Physical contact is to be avoided and 6 feet of distancing will be required when possible. Please avoid touching your face, eyes, nose, or mouth. Wash your hands immediately if you do so. Practice good coughing/sneezing etiquette. ACCESSIBILITY: FoodCycle firmly believes that we strengthen the social fabric of our community by involving all in service. If you feel you need accommodations to participate in this project please email the Opportunity Leader below. QUESTIONS? Contact us through the "I Want to Help" button. WANT TO SIGN UP?
