Our challenge
Real-life experience is at the heart of all that we do here at The Brain Tumour Charity. We rely heavily on the stories of people who have been affected by a brain tumour in some way to help us to raise awareness, inform our campaigning or research and illustrate the need for support in funding applications or grants. Our valuable case studies are also shared widely on our digital channels and in the media to help reach new audiences. We are fortunate to have lots of people in our engaged community who want to share their story with us. So, we need help to ensure we can support everyone who wishes to do that and also maintain a log and database of it all in our Story Library.

How can you help?

  • Be the first point of contact with those who wish to share their story to set up interviews with the Case Study Lead.
  • Secure sign-off from those who have been interviewed for the stories written about them as well as permissions for photos to illustrate their experience.
  • Support the Case Study Lead with conducting interviews, copywriting and uploading stories to the internal database and external website when required.

What impact will you have?
You will help to ensure that people sharing their story feel listened to, valued and supported throughout the process which can be emotive, cathartic and a personal challenge for many.

We’re looking for...
A person with a passion for real-life experience. We would love to find someone who knows the value, power and emotion which comes from people’s stories and the importance of supporting and helping people to speak openly and candidly about what they know and feel.

Ideally, you will have some experience within the media, maybe in a journalism and PR capacity, or the counselling profession.

You will be a great organiser, have second-to-none interpersonal skills and be able to manage a busy diary and various demands on time available.

Reliability and attention to detail would also be greatly appreciated.

We particularly encourage applications from those who are significantly underrepresented in our sector, including individuals from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities.

What can you gain from volunteering?
  • You’ll have the opportunity to put your existing skills into practice while developing and learning new ones to take forward into the future.
  • You’ll join a friendly and passionate team to develop an understanding of how this team at The Charity operates.

Location
All activities for this role can be done from home, from wherever the volunteer is based. However, this is a UK based opportunity only.

Practical considerations
You will receive a full induction to The Brain Tumour Charity and any specific training for the role, as well as ongoing direction from a team member within the External Affairs team.

We carry out reference checks for all individuals who will be volunteering with us on a regular basis. Volunteers will also be required to complete some internal data protection and disclosure documentation before commencing the role. Volunteers must be over 18.
