What is Food Club

The current food system is divided with no middle ground: limited free food for some and full price for others. The Food Club model is a big, systemic response focused on improving healthy food access in a high-dignity, high-choice environment. Qualifying low-income residents opt in by purchasing a membership, which provides food access at more convenient hours, all in a bright and inviting grocery-store style space staffed by volunteers.

Food Club invites qualifying low-income residents to take ownership and contribute at a level based on their income, offering a highly affordable way for members to invest in their family’s health and future. For a small monthly fee, members get points based on household size to spend on groceries as they wish throughout the month.

Volunteers are an enormous part of the daily operations at Food Club. Additional volunteers are needed to ensure we can provide the best possible service to our neighbors in need, for expanded hours of service.

Volunteer roles at Food Club include the following:
  • Checkout Station - Greet members at checkout and ring up their groceries using the touch-screen checkout and scanner. *No money exchanged.
  • Grocery Bagger - Greet members at checkout and help guests bag up their groceries, and assist the Checkout Station volunteers.
  • Guest Greeter - Welcome guests as they arrive at the Food Club and provide directions, information and a friendly greeting!
  • Food Stocking - Stock the Food Club shelves with products, and organize and straighten items on the floor.
  • Food Rescue Sorting - Turn food excess into food access for our members!
  • Food Repackaging - Repackage bulk dry goods or loose produce before the product goes out to the floor.
  • Guest Service Assistant - Work alongside our staff at the Guest Service desk to help guests navigate the building, register for memberships, and more!
  • Truck Driver - Drive a CAH truck to pick up food at grocers and deliver back to the Food Club.

Description

For nearly 50 years, we've been serving the community helping families prosper- with food, clothing, education, opportunity, and hope. As a community powered nonprofit, we are what our community chooses to do together!

You can volunteer at our Food Club, helping local families achieve food security, at our Community Kitchen, serving up warm food and friendly faces everyday of the week, at our Resale Store, refurbishing used items to find new homes and support our programs, with our Lakeshore Food Rescue program, turning excess food into food access, or at the Holland Community Garden, working to grow food that goes directly to our neighbors.
