Volunteer from home to create Thanksgiving greetings for seniors and low-income neighbors through the Community for Positive Aging at Hollywood Senior Center!

During this time of continued social distancing, bring cheer and comfort to community members with letters, cards, and drawings. Gestures like handwritten notes and well wishes show compassion and kindness and remind people that they are not alone. All ages are welcome to participate, and no volunteer application is required. This is a great at-home project for kids and families!

HOW TO PARTICIPATE: Write cards, create hand-made greetings, draw a picture, or make a Thanksgiving or autumn-themed coloring sheet for others. All of these will add extra joy to someone’s holiday.

  • Please leave envelopes unsealed
  • Stamps are not required.
  • There is no minimum or maximum - create as many greetings as you would like!

HOW TO DELIVER: Holiday greetings can be mailed to the Community of Positive Aging at Hollywood Senior Center, 1820 NE 40th Ave., Portland, OR 97212 or dropped off Mondays through Fridays from 9am to 4pm, now through November 17th.

  • Please include a note with your name(s), an email and/or phone number, and the total number of greetings.
  • You can mail-in or drop off Mon-Fri, 9am-4pm, at Hollywood Senior Center.
  • Thanksgiving greetings must be received by Wednesday, Nov 17th.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How many greetings should I make? There is no minimum or maximum. You can make a batch of 10 or a batch of 50! Cards will be distributed to approximately 800 households. The more we receive the more holiday cheer each person will receive!

How should I address or sign my cards? You can choose to sign your cards personally if you’d like, sign for "your friend" or feel free to leave unsigned.

Do I need to include a stamp on my cards? Most cards will be hand-delivered, and so postage is not required, but we will gladly accept donations of stamps.

Can I get volunteer credit for my school or other requirements? Yes! Those needing credit for volunteer service please contact us regarding any paperwork (see below). We generally credit 10 minutes per individual letter or card, or just let us know your total time spent.

Mission Statement

Community for Positive Aging is a caring and healthy organization that encourages intergenerational relationships, recognizes the wisdom and experience of its elders, and demonstrates awareness and respect for the aging process. Seniors have access to a full spectrum of services, including social, emotional, educational, and recreational opportunities appropriate to their unique needs and interests. We value, appreciate and encourage the important contributions of older adults in our community and empower people of all ages to achieve happy, healthy aging.

Description

CFPA was founded as Hollywood Senior Center in 1973, a nonprofit committed to creating an uplifting and vibrant environment for adults 55 and older while providing a channel for intergenerational relationships and learning. In July 2021, HSC expanded by absorbing The Giving Tree, another not-for-profit organization, committed to providing residential services to people living in affordable housing, including access to culturally-specific food, throughout Portland; merger of these two organizations form CFPA.
