Together Estranged is the nation's first nonprofit organization to provide support services to those estranged from family members. We currently have a Facebook Support Group and a developing website that will feature information related to estrangement.

Estrangement is a common experience - yet it isn't discussed often because of stigma. According to one U.S. study, 40% of participants had experienced estrangement from a family member - and many of these people are adult children who are struggling with isolation, lack of social support and mental health concerns. Estrangement (loss of relationship with a family member) can occur for many "reasons", including: abuse, neglect, lack of acceptance for LGBTQ+ community, dislike of someone's partner, religious beliefs, major political differences, personality clashes, situations and more.

Together Estranged is committed to creating an inclusive environment for all our volunteers, where different backgrounds and perspectives are valued and encouraged - regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, marital status, ancestry, physical or mental disability, veteran status, gender identity, or sexual orientation.

This position is an unpaid volunteer position.

Together Estranged (TE) is currently working on developing programming - we've currently started a Private Facebook Support Group for adult children to find community and healing, and our next biggest project is to build out an aesthetically-appealing website with content that speaks to our beneficiaries.

Skills we're looking for:

  • Excellent writing skills, can provide samples upon request
  • Experience with estrangement personally or a desire to help this particular community
  • Prompt communication and project delivery
  • Passionate about mental health, inclusivity, creating safe spaces

Tasks:

  • Write various blogs and web content on topics of estrangement
  • Research relevant information to add credibility to articles
  • Good eye for detail, spelling, grammar
  • Familiarity with using stock images from Unsplash and similar sites
  • All articles will be given credit to the author (you!)

Time requirements:

This volunteer opportunity requires about 5-10 hours a week. Please know this is an unpaid, volunteer position.

We'd love to find someone who'd be willing to maintain an ongoing relationship with us for the website, but we are open to working with you and your schedule/time frame.

Make a difference in an area that is rarely discussed, researched and supported here in the U.S. and beyond. We look forward to hearing from you!

Mission Statement

Together Estranged (TE) understands that sometimes familial relationships just don't work out, no matter how desperately we want for them to. Family members may be extremely different, abuse may be present - and in some cases, family members may be unwilling to dive into the deep work that's required for healing because they're not at a place in their lives to do so. Rather than trying to force these relationships to work, we believe in empowering people to do what's best for them. If reconciliation is a part of their journey, that's wonderful! But if it's not, we want those who seek our help to know that they're not alone.

Description

Together Estranged (TE) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports and empowers those estranged (or becoming estranged) from family members, while enhancing social understanding for the destigmatization of estrangement.
