Imagine having a medical appointment, being confined to a wheelchair with limited function and the transport company drops you off and picks you up later. Add to that sight, hearing or cognition limitations and no family to go with you.
Resident Escort Volunteers accompany our aging residents from the nursing home to their appointment and back, riding with them in the transport van scheduled by staff. These volunteers are often the eyes, ears, hands and feet for the resident and make them feel safe and secure when away from their familiar surroundings.
Resident appointments are usually scheduled a few weeks to a month in advance. When we get a request for an escort, we reach out to a volunteer to see if you are available on that specific date and time.
If so, you will meet the resident here at St Augustine Health Campus, ride with them in the transport van and stay with them throughout their appointment. When you return, you will escort the resident back to their room and give any paperwork from the appointment to their nurse.
Most appointments times are in the early part of the day. Length of appointments can vary.

The St. Augustine Child Enrichment Center provides early education and child care for 80+ children, beginning at 6 weeks through preschool. Holy Family provides home health care, residential and community-based hospice services. Emerald Village Senior Living provides independent and assisted-living apartments located in the west suburbs for active seniors 55+.

- Patience and flexibility are important. Resident Escorts must be able to push a wheelchair and walk from parking lots to doctors' offices. TB test is required for volunteers who give 10 hours or more per month.
