Come & Cook With Friends!

Do you and your friends love to cook? Nativity House Shelter needs your help!

Nativity House is an overnight shelter & day center for men and women experiencing homelessness in Tacoma.

Nativity House relies on volunteer meal groups to help prepare and serve meal at the shelter. Volunteers also pack meals that are delivered to local sister sites supporting unhoused adults and families in Tacoma.

Groups are encouraged to use ingredients available in the kitchen and/or bring their own ingredients for whatever they plan to prepare.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to serve onsite, however youth can help with food prep offsite.

The Nativity House Kitchen serves approx. 120-200 meals per meal time. We need volunteers who know how cook for a crowd or can scale up recipes. Groups often do meals like pancakes, casseroles, spaghetti & meatballs and Sloppy Joes.

The Nativity House Kitchen provides breakfast, lunch and dinner, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. We ALWAYS need groups to help around the holidays.

How to Get Started:

Interested group leaders should email meganed@ccsww.org to request a volunteer registration form (sent via PDF or mailed with a self-addressed/stamped envelope) or they can register online:

Interested but have questions? Call Megan at 253-365-4111. There are lots of ways for groups to serve and there is variance in how each meal group chooses to help.

How it works- the basics

  • Volunteers must sign a Covid-19 liability waiver
  • Volunteers who wish to serve onsite must pass a background check (Washington State Patrol & NSOPW- National Sex Offender Public Website)

Mission Statement

At Catholic Community Services we believe every child should grow up in a safe, loving and nurturing environment. The elderly should be able to live with security and dignity. A healthy family life should be affirmed and supported in our communities. Compassion, love and respect for all people, especially the poor and most vulnerable. In joining with others to change systems that oppress, discriminate or otherwise cause human suffering. Employees and volunteers should work in an environment that fosters respect, teamwork and excellence. In all of these things for all people, whatever their color, whatever language they speak or however they worship.

Description

Volunteer Services provides low-income adults (anyone 18 years old or older) who have temporary or permanent functional disabilities, including those associated with aging. The people we serve can not afford to purchase the kinds of service we provide, do not qualify for assistance from other sources and do not have family or friends available to help them. Service is provided on an as-volunteers-are-available basis. There are never any fees for the services provided.
