Nativity House is an overnight shelter and day center for men and women experiencing homelessness in Tacoma.
Nativity House relies on Volunteer Meal Groups to help supply meals for guests who are experiencing homelessness. Groups are encouraged to either use ingredients available in the kitchen or bring the ingredients necessary to prepare the meal that they plan to cook and serve.
The Nativity House Kitchen Team provides breakfast, lunch and dinner, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. Our volunteer team cooks for anywhere between 170 and 300+ Guests.
The shelter has 167 beds and the Nativity House Apartments provides 50 units of permanent supportive housing for chronically homeless single adults with disabilities. Meals are provided for Nativity House Guests, apartment residents and anyone who comes to our door for food.
How to Get Started
Interested Group Leaders are encouraged to email meganed@ccsww.org or stop by Nativity House to pick up a volunteer application and group paperwork.
How it works
Group leaders are the only volunteers who need to be "fully vetted" VS Volunteers. The rest of the team just needs to be background checked and sign Covid-19 liability waivers.
Anyone serving onsite is required to provide proof of Covid-19 vaccination and wear PPE. PPE is provided
Group Leaders need to:
- Complete the volunteer application and waivers
- Be background checked and reference checked
- Attend a volunteer orientation
- Provide proof of Covid-19 vaccination (if serving onsite)
- Complete the background check forms (WSP & Disclosure Statement)
- Sign the Covid-19 Waiver
- Provide proof of Covid-19 vaccination (if serving onsite)
- Sign the media consent form (nice but not required)
Meals do not need to be cooked onsite or even be homemade (pizza is very popular).
We do ask that the group leader have or be willing to obtain a WA State food handlers permit.
Anyone serving onsite needs to provide proof of Covid-19

Mission Statement
At Catholic Community Services we believe â ¦ â ¦ every child should grow up in a safe, loving and nurturing environment. â ¦ the elderly should be able to live with security and dignity. â ¦healthy family life should be affirmed and supported in our communities. â ¦ in compassion, love and respect for all people, especially the poor and most vulnerable. â ¦ in joining with others to change systems that oppress, discriminate or otherwise cause human suffering. â ¦ employees and volunteers should work in an environment that fosters respect, teamwork and excellence. â ¦ in all of these things for all people, whatever their color, whatever language they speak or however they worship.
Description
Volunteer Chore serves low-income adults (anyone 18 years old or older) who have temporary or permanent functional disabilities, including those associated with aging. The people we serve canâ t afford to purchase the kinds of service we provide, donâ t qualify for assistance from other sources and donâ t have family or friends available to help them. Service is provided on an as-volunteers-are-available basis. There are never any fees for the services provided.
