HSED-EL Tutor

Literacy Services of Wisconsin’s High School Equivalency Diploma for English Learners (HSED-EL) is an innovative approach to meeting the needs of adult English language learners in today’s world. Designed specifically for English learners of any language background, it provides a pathway for those in need of a high school (U.S. grades 9-12) credential to gain academic, workforce readiness, and English language skills all in one place.

Program runs June 1 -- September 16, 2021

Training starts May 2021; first tutoring sessions will take place second week of June

HSED-EL Tutors will provide one-on-one virtual tutoring sessions for a student who is currently completing the HSED-EL program.

  • The main focus of your sessions will be to help your student with their homework
  • Student homework will include things like writing papers, completing worksheets, reading and answering comprehension questions, and more
  • Tutors will be provided access to class content and homework materials through a tutor-only Google Classroom
  • Students in the HSED-EL program are not native English speakers; their tutors will help facilitate understanding and communication

Qualifications:

  • Tech skills needed: Zoom, Google Drive, Google Classroom (training provided)
  • Patience, enthusiasm, empathy, positive attitude
  • Resourceful, creative, and able to use available resources to help students learn
  • Willingness to learn material along with your student

Schedule:

  • You and your student will determine a tutoring schedule that works for both of you, outside of their regularly scheduled class times
  • You must be able to meet at least one hour per week with your student, though more frequently is preferred, depending on how much support your student needs
