The Refugee Youth Mentorship Program of Lutheran Social Services serves 120+ refugee status families a year through weekly support in achieving their goals centered around job readiness, college readiness, career exploration, language support and life skills that get our communities closer to self-sufficiency.

This program stemmed from addressing the gaps in the refugee resettlement system. One on one mentoring builds strong relations which leads to improved confidence, self- advocacy, life skills building and resource sharing. This position reports to Brooke Balla.

Project Focus Areas and Activities

Program Evaluation and Data: To assist with the coordination of a data collection project that includes the creation of phase 2 of a comprehensive data collection and reporting system for youth programs offered in the areas of youth leadership and civic engagement; career and college readiness programming. To assist with the implementation of a program evaluation project to include the RYMP’s youth programs.

Capacity Building & Mentor Support: The member will Schedule monthly mentor check-ins to track goal progress, share resources, and for program accountability.

Partnership Development: The member will build partnerships with the agencies that can bridge the gaps between refugee resettlement (digital literacy, financial literacy, mental health, life skills, access to resources). Such as Immigrant Student Resource Center at the U of A, IRSRC (Immigrant and Refugee Student Resource Center), and TUSD Refugee Student Services.

Event Planning: In coordination with external partners and current ambassadors, the member will schedule events covering resume writing, applying for college, FAFSA, college enrollment, job readiness, career exploration, English language development, RYMP life skills checklist, and mental health. They will assist in facilitating and helping with event planning specific to building life-skills.
