Queens of the Castro is an organization that seeks to empower and create safe spaces for LGBTQ+ youth ages 16-25 through drag. As part of their mission, they created DRAGLAB, a year-long mentorship opportunity for residents of the Bay Area in which an LGBTQ+ youth (grades 6-12) is partnered with a drag mentor to learn more about Drag and LGBTQ+ history, and will be invited to dance rehearsals, makeup and transformation workshops, virtual drag shows with professional performers, and more. Open roles for this year’s DRAGLAB are as follows:
Youth: will attend 1 welcome orientation, 10 mentee group sessions (1 per month), 20 individual meetings with Drag mentor (2 per month), and 1 final celebration, and receive invitations to optional makeup workshops, dance classes, and drag showcases.
Mentor: will attend 1 mentors’ orientation, 10 group sessions (1 per month), 20 individual meetings with Drag mentee (2 per month), and 1 final celebration, and receive invitations to optional makeup workshops, dance classes, and drag showcases. They will also receive $500.00 for their time and commitment to the program.
Intern: will work with Grace Towers, the Director of Programming for Queens of Castro, and the DRAGLAB mentors to run the program.
For the time being, most sessions will take place virtually on Saturdays at 3 PM. Online access to recorded workshops will be available to those who need them.
