Literacy Mid-South

Hey, you! Yes, you! Have you been looking for a volunteer opportunity but need one with a structured timeline and preset goals? Well, this is your lucky day!

Literacy Mid-South is looking for volunteer tutors to work one-on-one with adult learners who are beginning-level readers interested in earning their high school diploma. Sessions will take place at the Excel Center located in South Memphis, 38106.

Volunteer tutors must commit totwo hours per week in the morning or afternoon, for a period of six months to a year . Training will be provided by Literacy Mid-South and Excel Center prior to being matched with a learner. Teaching experience is not required.

As an added bonus, your learner will receive a certificate after being in the program for a year, even if they choose to stay longer to pursue other goals. This will come complete with a mini ceremony where you can see them recognized for their efforts. How cool is that?

If interested in volunteering, please contact Stacy at for more information! We look forward to meeting you!

About Literacy Mid-South

Mission Statement

Our vision is 100% literacy in the Mid-South. Literacy Mid-South is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to create a community actively engaged in continuous learning. Somewhere between 20% to 30% of adults in the Memphis metro area are functionally illiterate. That means more than just unemployment -- their minds are unused and their dreams are unrealized.

YOU can help. There is no greater gift to give than helping a person succeed. Facilitate learning in the life of an adult who struggles with reading, writing, math and English as a foreign language through Literacy Mid-South's Adult Learning Program and English For You program. Volunteers are able to serve as facilitators to groups of adults or provide individual goal-centered tutoring to an adult learner.
