No one should be held back from a dream because of their reading or language abilities. As a volunteer tutor with Literacy Mid-South, you will play a critical role in helping an adult gain the basic literacy and language skills necessary to live their best life. If you are comfortable reading and/or speaking English and are excited to connect with a learner, you are ready to be trained as a tutor. With your talents plus our training and support, you’ll be ready to empower an adult learner to master the basic literacy and language skills they need to achieve their goals. Volunteer tutors can choose between two options: working with adults who read below a sixth-grade level on their reading skills or working with adult English Language Learners to develop their conversational English skills. All volunteers work with learners for about two hours a week to help them develop basic literacy and language skills, build confidence, and reach personal goals. By empowering individual learners, volunteer tutors are vital in achieving Literacy Mid-South’s vision of 100% literacy in the communities we call home. Ready to find out more? Are you a whiz with an iPad and want to share those skills? You are in luck! Literacy Mid-South is partnering with the Orange Mound Community Center, For the Kingdom, and Memphis Chinese Community Center to provide iPad instruction to senior citizens who live in those neighborhoods. What's required to get on board? Attend an info session about being a volunteer with Literacy Mid-South and then a half-day training. From there, you will choose the location where you'd like to serve and a Literacy Mid-South staff member will meet you there to provide introductions and go over the process. Each center will have appointment sheets for the seniors to sign up for their iPad instruction, and the days and times will be based on your availability. Your commitment will be an hour and half on the days you can assist. Still interested? Hooray! Sign up and we will reach out to you.

Organization Information
Mission Statement
Our vision is 100% literacy in the Mid-South. Literacy Mid-South is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to create a community actively engaged in continuous learning. Somewhere between 20% to 30% of adults in the Memphis metro area are functionally illiterate. That means more than just unemployment -- their minds are unused and their dreams are unrealized.
Description
YOU can help. There is no greater gift to give than helping a person succeed. Facilitate learning in the life of an adult who struggles with reading, writing, math and English as a foreign language through Literacy Mid-South's Adult Learning Program and English For You program. Volunteers are able to serve as facilitators to groups of adults or provide individual goal-centered tutoring to an adult learner.
