Do you love to make a joyful noise? Let's make music together! How about singing old hymns with a hospice patient who has dementia?
Many dementia and Alzheimer's patient's respond to music that they heard in their earlier years, and many spent a lot of those early years singing hymns in church.
Here's where you come in! You sit with the patient and sing standards like, "Amazing Grace" or "The Old Rugged Cross" or even "Jesus Loves Me" and see what happens next.
A patient who may be non-verbal might mouth the words right along with you. Someone who hasn't spoken in months may begin singing. A person who doesn't have the will or desire to engage in life anymore may begin tapping the arm of their chair to the beat of the song YOU sing.
This is a very moving experience and makes a positive difference in their life -- and in yours.
Brookdale Hospice volunteers receive special training to provide support to hospice patients and their families at end of life. Why not make the end of their life as good as the beginning?
If this sounds like something you can sing to, please visit our website at Become a Hospice Volunteer - LHC Group or contact April Roush, Volunteer Coordinator at
614-210-1150 or email april.roush@brookdale.com for more information.
