About k9 connection

2116 Arlington Ave., Suite 100, Los Angeles, CA 90018, US

Mission Statement

k9 connection is a non-profit 501(c)(3) program of The People Concern (formerly OPCC & Lamp Community). Since 2005, k9 connection has brought the magic of dogs and kids together. In our innovative programs teens in continuation and community day schools train homeless shelter dogs in basic obedience and agility using positive reinforcement techniques, giving the students the benefits of the human animal interaction and in turn helping the dogs to become more adoptable. k9 connection empowers students to develop greater self-awareness and focuses on goal setting, personal accountability and motivation among other critical life skills. Separate from the school programs, in 2018, k9 connection launched its Pets' Landing program, providing free veterinary and other pet services and support to persons experiencing homelessness with pets through quarterly clinics, a foster program and other needs by request with the goal of helping to keep people and their pets healthy, happy, and housed.

In partnership with LA Animal Services and area rescues, k9 connection selects dogs to participate in year-round programs designed to educate and inspire teens in challenging situations. Intensive two-to-three week programs are designed specifically for counselor-referred teens at participating schools; concluding with a graduation celebration and the placement of each dog in a permanent home. After the programs conclude, students are invited to continue to be involved by participating as peer leaders and interns.
