Are you a first generation college student or recent college graduate? Promise Scholars is looking for local volunteers to create video content to inspire local elementary, middle, and high school students. Our campaign, College is 4 U, is meant to show students that regardless of the situation, they belong in college. We are focusing on first-generation, low-income students who may not be given the resources that they need to succeed. The students that we work with are doing their best to navigate virtual learning and the effects of COVID-19 on their communities.

That's where you come in! We want to hear your journey, and what it took for you to graduate high school, navigate your college journey, and graduate into your career. We are looking for volunteers that would like to answer questions about college on video that we will share with students to motivate them during this difficult year and beyond.

If you are a first-generation college student and recent college graduate, we would love to hear from you! Volunteers will be asked to record their own videos on their personal cell phone or camera.

We are looking for volunteers that meet one or more of the below requirements:

  • Graduated from a local high school, such a Ontario High School, Chaffey High School, or Montclair High School. Other high schools are okay, please note in your email.
  • Currently enrolled in a postsecondary program such as a certificate program, working towards their Associate's, Bachelor's or beyond (i.e. Master's degree, PhD, etc.)

  • First generation college graduate with an Associate's or Bachelor's

  • Bilingual (Helpful, but not required)

  • Able to relate to students from under-resourced/minority/etc. backgrounds
  • Able to film video content on phone or camera and send it in for editing

Mission Statement

Promise Scholars believes that unlocking the potential of our community relies on unlocking the potential of all our children. So we bring everyone together--students, parents, educators, businesses, and local leaders--to introduce kids to the opportunities available after high school and make sure they get on the education pathway to achieve their goals. When we help them become successful and contributing adults, our entire region benefits from a brighter, more productive future. The vision of the Promise Scholars Initiative is to prepare all Ontario-Montclair School District (OMSD) students who go on to Chaffey, Montclair, and Ontario High Schools to reach their college and career dreams.

Description

Our early and all approach-we connect with all our kids starting in Kindergarten and continue that relationship even after high school-requires a lot of resources and partners. Every kid has the potential to succeed, and helping kids reach their goals is key in strengthening our community and a wide circle of caring and engaged adults helps make this possible.

We work to increase student knowledge about college and career technical training opportunities and help them develop and act on their plans for a post-secondary education.

This is achieved through in-class curriculum on college and careers starting in Kindergarten. Promise Scholars also takes all 5 th and 8 th graders on field trips to community colleges and four year universities so they can begin to envision themselves as college students. All 6 th graders participate in business leader presentations in class, where community members come speak about their path to a degree or certificate and their career. In 9 th grade we help student explore their personality strengths and career options. And 12 th graders get help with their college application and financial aid applications.

We serve low income neighborhoods in Ontario and Montclair where the majority of students will be the first in their family to complete college.
