Help us help kids and families in low-income food-insecure communities in Brooklyn.

We need volunteers and donors to help us.

NOTE: Be ready to be a self-starter or a leader. We need everyone ready to do something and take the lead to get it done. Okay?

We don't know exactly which schools and places yet in Brooklyn - but our focus is places where fruits and vegetables and healthy options are scarce. Let's change that for MLK Day.
Help us fight food insecurity and empower all to eat fresh and grow.

Seeds in the Middle opens student-run farm stands, grows gardens and engages all to cook healthy at schools in our highest need neighborhoods.

We know people of color - mainly African-Americans and Latinx residents - are dying at twice or three times the rates. of those more affluent due to underlying conditions like diabetes, heart disease, obesity. The CDC says all these preventable diseases can be avoided if people have easy, affordable, nearby access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

Well, help us empower that Martin Luther King Weekend 2023.

Let us know if you can:
1. Help us build garden boxes - (paint for spring)
2. Help make soups or hot food and teach children how to cook with you
3. Help distribute in Brownsville or other neighborhoods
4. Help at pop-up farmstand in low-income Brooklyn neighborhoods
5. Help us advertise the markets, post or give out flyers in neighborhoods we serve. and publicize our campaign on social media and wherever you can.
6. Help us virtually by calling or texting our community members to let them know about our events
7. Cook for a local bake sale in Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens or other activities

7. MOST OF ALL, help us fundraise to pay for a Veggie Mobile Van so we reach neighborhoods where there is limited fruits and vegetables and create jobs for locals to run the van!

Ever heard of the book, "The Engine That Could"? That's us.

About Seeds in the Middle

Location:

153 Warren Street, BROOKLYN, NY 11201, US

Mission Statement

Seeds in the Middle partners with students, educators, parents & their communities to access all opportunities, beginning with improving health, enhancing arts education and greening their environment. We empower and educate all to get healthy and scale educational and social disparities. Our pilot schools are in central Brooklyn, a neighborhood with among the city’s highest obesity, diabetes, and heart disease rates. We teach how to grow, market, cook, access and prepare fresh food, how to exercise & engage in the arts, all the elements needed to promote life-changing lifelong health. Our volunteers come from all walks of life. We cross cultures. We transform gray into green, destitution into inspiration.

Description

Seeds in the Middle offers joyful, healthy interventions that nurture the whole child and address the multiple obstacles blocking low-income children and families from getting healthy. We teach how to grow edible gardens, run a student-led Hip2B Healthy Market, bring chefs into schools, started soccer, running and fitness programs at school and in the community and music and arts in the schools. We integrate professional development for teachers so that a healthy lifestyle and environmental stewardship becomes organic and sustainable in the school community. To build community, we created Soccer for Harmony tournaments and the Crown Heights Farmers Market. In two years, we have engaged more than 1,000 families, and students and teachers report changing their habits to include more fruits and vegetables, and fitness. This is a pilot for any school and Seeds in the Middle plans to replicate.
