VIRTUAL English at Home Tutors

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, Inc

Our Program

Arriving in the United States as a refugee or immigrant can be confusing and overwhelming. Adjusting to new customs, navigating new systems, and learning a new language are all challenges that our clients face as they settle-in to their new communities.

Our goal is to build fundamental literacy skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) for emerging English speakers facing barriers (transportation, childcare or cultural practices) to attending traditional English classes.

Volunteers address these barriers by providing one-on-one or small group virtual sessions at times that work best for the learners. Refugees and volunteers create a relationship that expands their networks and promotes refugee resiliency while building the real-life knowledge, attitudes, and skills.

How can I help?

As a volunteer, you provide an opportunity for refugees to learn and improve their everyday English speaking, reading and writing. Our learners each have different strengths and areas for growth. Some may speak English, but not read or write or vice versa while others may not read in their first language or their language uses a different alphabet.

Regardless, sessions are learner-focused. By determining learner goals, you develop lessons that maximize strengths and encourage learner persistence!

Skills/ Experience

Teaching, tutoring or cross-cultural experiences are strongly recommended, additional language skills or experience overseas are not required but are a plus. Training and resources will be provided to all volunteers.

The Impact

This opportunity is ideal for volunteers who want to support refugees/immigrants in a meaningful way.

Whether it is: scheduling a doctor’s appointment, passing the citizenship test, asking their child’s teacher questions, going shopping or encouraging discussion about daily life, you will make a difference by providing the tools for success!

All of our classes and programs are free to our clients, and we couldn’t provide the level of service we do without the help of our wonderful volunteers. We believe the connections our volunteers make with their clients are mutually beneficial and our communities are stronger and more vibrant when we build these bonds.

Description

Catholic Charities mission to "provide service to those in need, to advocate for justice and to call upon others to do the same" has been the core of our work since 1920. When we accomplish this, lives are transformed and the benefits to the community can be exponential starting by improving the quality of life one person at a time.
