Catholic Charities’ Adult Day Center is a home away from home for our members. Adult Day Services provides adults with special needs a healthy daytime environment and the opportunity to go home to family each evening. Our program enables otherwise isolated individuals to find new joy and companionship, while their families can rest knowing their loved one is cared for, safe and engaged in stimulating activities. https://www.ccmke.org/Catholic-Charities/Get-Help/Adult-Day-Services.htm Our Members -many who have suffered from a stroke, arthritis, Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia, as well as developmental disabilities- benefit from trained and experienced staff, socialization and physical activities, and bathing services. We could not do what we do without the help of our volunteers! Are you looking for a fun and meaningful activity to do with a group of friends, colleagues, family or just by yourself? Consider sharing your talent for music, art, or physical education! In our welcoming, home-like environment, we welcome you share your talents and skills with our members, staff, and other volunteers as well. In the past, volunteers have shared their musical talents (singing or an instrument) and have brought knowledge from their studies or professions (art therapy, physical education, occupational therapy, certified nursing etc.). We welcome all local talent - anyone who can play an instrument, hold a tune or just plain loves to sing (just to name a few)! We even have a piano on site! You do not have to be a professional musician or artist. We welcome volunteers with a friendly smile who want to connect with our Members. In this flexible role, volunteers can choose whether they want to volunteer on a one-time basis, sporadically, once or twice a month, or on a weekly basis for a few hours in the morning or afternoon on weekdays (between the hours of 9:30am - 4:30pm). Our Adult Day Center is located at 1919 N. 60th Street in Milwaukee. Questions? Email Jessica Brandt at: volunteer@ccmke.org

Catholic Charities’ In-Home Support Program volunteers provide an extra set of eyes, ears, and hands to help neighbors in our communities to stay in their homes as long as possible. By providing basic housekeeping and companionship for just a couple of hours a week, volunteers can give older adults and adults with disabilities an improved sense of well-being and are now able to use their energy for things like socialization with friends and family or completing other important tasks. Each client provides direction on the services they need, from light housekeeping (floor cleaning, taking garbage/recycling out, changing sheets, cleaning bathroom and other areas), to meal preparation, laundry, or other assistance. To volunteers these may be just little tasks, but these "little things" help clients remain independent in their homes. The relationships that they build through tasks and conversation are also impactful, not only for the client, but for the volunteer as well. You do not need formal experience, just your time and a caring, sympathetic approach to working with older adults and adults with disabilities. If you have an extra two hours every week to help a neighbor in need, we'd love to hear from you! Available hours are 8:30am-5:00pm, Monday through Friday. Hours are flexible, based on your schedule. "I like to be on my own. If I didn’t have help, I would have to try to do these things myself. It’s wonderful when you get someone to help. I look forward to the days she (Mary Beth) comes. We get along wonderfully". -Alice, client Who We Serve Each client has their own story and differing needs, like Marles, but they all have the common desire to remain at home surrounded by all the things they love and cherish. At 90 years old, Marles lives alone and shared that she often feels lonely. She has survived many of her friends and family, and her loving daughter Kelly lives in California. When Marles began to show signs of dementia, Kelly worried about her mother’s safety and wellbeing. In May of 2021, Marles was paired with a Catholic Charities homemaker, who keeps in close communication with Kelly. A typical home visit brings light housekeeping, meal preparation, laundry, other assistance, and warm conversation. Working alongside her homemaker, when she is able, brings Marles joy and renewed confidence in her independence. Comfortable with driving to a client’s residence throughout neighborhoods in Milwaukee County. Partner with an adult immigrant or refugee that would like to build upon their everyday English speaking, reading and writing skills. We focus on fundamental literacy skills for English learners facing barriers to attending traditional English classes, such as transportation or childcare. Our education programs are free to our clients and we couldn’t provide the level of service we do without our wonderful volunteers. We use English Unlocked (literacymn.org) an English language curriculum designed specifically for adult learners. We will provide you with the materials and training you and your learner need to be successful. Our program is learner-focused and seeks to build upon the different strengths that learner’s bring with them. Their goals range from: scheduling a doctor’s appointment, reading their bills, asking their child’s teacher questions, going shopping, or even reading a bedtime story in English to their child. The curriculum gives volunteers the structure they need to meet these goals. Our volunteers encourage and support the adult learner by helping them develop confidence in their English skills. We believe the connections our volunteers make with their learners are mutually beneficial; our communities are stronger and more vibrant when we build these bonds. You will make a difference by providing the tools for success! Please also note: Due to the time it takes to complete training and to find a learner who is a good match, this is not a quick-start opportunity, and we generally ask for a 6-month minimum commitment. Skills/Experience Likes to connect with others Feels comfortable working with individuals with varying levels of English Works independently, yet is willing to ask questions, as needed Seeks out educational resources and can develop teaching materials, if needed Compassionate and culturally sensitive Thinks on their feet and creatively problem solves as the needs of the learner evolve Comfortable communicating in English to speakers of various levels- English speakers of all levels are welcomed and encouraged to apply No previous experience is necessary and training is provided; however, teaching, tutoring, cross-cultural experiences and/or additional language skills are a plus Must be 18 years old to volunteer Time Commitment 1-2 hours per week; most learners are looking for 45 minutes to 1-hour sessions, once or twice a week Schedules will be determined based on both the learners’ and the volunteer’s availability; people meet during the week and weekend, in the morning, afternoons, or early evenings A volunteer may work with more than one learner individually or in a small group Training & Materials Volunteers will receive training before being matched and will have ongoing educational opportunities to enhance their teaching techniques through periodic check ins, monthly newsletters and Volunteer MeetUps (virtual educational and collaboration time) Volunteers and learners will be provided with hard copies of the English Unlocked curriculum Volunteers also have access to a vast virtual and physical library of supplementary instructional material The Impact Here’s what one couple in our English at Home program says: "We feel lucky to have our tutor. She understands us. She treats us with respect and accommodates our schedule. We didn’t study back in Myanmar so it’s harder for us to learn now but having a good tutor does help us build our confidence and we try harder to learn. We face a language barrier but our tutor doesn’t give up on us and we appreciate her. Thank you, teacher, for your time and for being with us." Questions? Catholic Charities’ Adult Day Center is a home away from home for our members. As a volunteer, you will gain countless memories while engaging members (either one-on-one or in a small group) in conversation, daily exercise activities as well as crafts and games to keep their minds and bodies active. No two days will be the same as our daily programming is based on our members needs and wants. We welcome you share your talents, skills and interests with our members, staff, and other volunteers. Volunteers have shared their musical talents (singing or an instrument), have brought knowledge from their studies or professions (art therapy, occupational therapy, certified nursing etc.), ran exercise or other small groups. Who we serve It is truly the members make it a second home and remind all of us of the powerful impact of family. Our members come with their own stories and experiences, like Mary, a former WWII RN, who is a naturally caring person and is often seen as being in "nurse mode" with the other members. Connect with John, a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War, Carol Jean, who lives every day to its fullest and Lizzie, who just celebrated her 100 th birthday with her ADC family. Read more about our ADC members and their stories- Impact Stories: Adult Day Services (ccmke.org) Those who attend the Adult Day Center have a variety of health concerns such as: having suffered from a stroke, arthritis, Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia, as well as developmental disabilities. Outside of the Adult Day Center, members are being cared for by family or live in a group home setting. The Adult Day Center provides family caregivers the opportunity to enjoy much needed respite during the day. They are confident that their loved one is safe and cared for while they work, run errands, and meet other responsibilities. More about the Adult Day Center In our social and engaging atmosphere, we provide a place for our members to stay safe and healthy with the comfort of going home every night. We are large enough to offer a wide range of services, yet small enough for our Certified nursing assistants to respond personally and promptly to individual needs. Our variety of daily programming is based on our members needs and Interests. Questions? Contact Jessica Brandt at: volunteer@ccmke.org

Support youth from refugee and immigrant families so that they become confident speakers, readers, and writers of English! English learners (ELs) are often given homework that is too hard for them to complete because they are not yet strong enough in English fundamentals. You can make a difference in the life of a child through this program that focuses on basic vocabulary, the alphabet, numbers, and reading. Strengthening these areas will give ELs the foundation they need to be successful at school! Catholic Charities partners with Zablocki Community School (Milwaukee) to match ELs most in need of support with volunteers passionate about education. Volunteers with Zablocki School will work one-on-one with a student at the student’s home once or twice a week for 45 minutes. We will provide training and resources, but you will be responsible for teaching in a way that maximizes student strengths and encourages a love of learning! You will make a difference by building a positive relationship with an elementary school student and helping them advance their English! Please also note: Due to the time it takes to complete training and to find a learner who is a good match, this is not a quick-start opportunity. We generally ask for a 6-month minimum commitment, ideally through the end of the 2023-2024 school year. Skills/ Experience Likes to connect with others Is engaging, fun, energetic, and able to create meaningful connections Is compassionate and culturally sensitive Feels comfortable working with individuals with varying levels of English Works independently, yet is willing to ask questions, as needed Thinks on their feet and creatively problem solve as the needs of the learner changes People who were English language learners as children themselves or grew-up in immigrant families are encouraged to apply Is comfortable communicating in English to speakers of various levels-English speakers of all levels are welcomed and encouraged to apply No previous experience is necessary; training is provided. Teaching, tutoring, cross-cultural experiences or additional language skills are a plus Must be 18 years old to volunteer alone or 16 to volunteer with the volunteer’s parent present Time Commitment In-Person: One or two 45-minute sessions per week, plus prep time Schedule Volunteering is flexible and can be on weekdays after school or on weekends. Training & Materials Volunteers will receive training before being matched and will have ongoing educational opportunities to enhance their teaching techniques through periodic check-ins, monthly newsletters, and Volunteer MeetUps that include virtual educational and collaboration time. Slide decks are provided for the first 16 weeks and then support is provided so that you can create your own lessons. The Impact While refugee and immigrant parents are passionate about their children’s education, many believe they cannot effectively help their children with homework because they grew up in a different educational system and/or struggle with English themselves. During the 2021-2022 school year, parents with children in this program noted improvements in their children’s reading comprehension and decoding skills, plus a boost in their overall confidence in speaking English improved. 89% of parents wanted their youth to participate in this program for the upcoming school year. All of our programs are free to our refugee & immigrant learners, and we couldn’t provide the level of service we do without the help of our wonderful volunteers. We believe the connections our volunteers make with their learners are mutually beneficial and make our communities stronger and more vibrant. Questions? Email Jessica Brandt at: volunteer@ccmke.org
