ORGANIZATION: Children Mending Hearts

Image_202012041556

This year our organization has opened an Outdoor Learning Park in the housing community of Imperial Courts in Watts, California, a community which experiences disproportionate rates of child poverty. When schools were forced to transition to distance learning, the families of Imperial Courts faced additional challenges presented by lack of internet access and space. With four or five kids attending classes all at once in a small apartment, things get difficult fast.

As we evaluated our resources and recognized the needs of the community, the Outdoor Learning Park was built, providing a safe and quiet learning environment. All students have access to iPads with 5G internet, volunteer staff to provide support, and nutritious breakfast, lunch, and snack time. The Outdoor Learning Park has become an incredible resource for so many, and is sustainable because of support from people like you!

As a volunteer, you will be assisting students in joining their online classes, and will help staff to maintain a safe and quiet working environment!

Mission Statement

CHILDREN MENDING HEARTS IS DEDICATED TO COMBATING BULLYING AND INTOLERANCE BY INSPIRING EMPATHY IN CHILDREN THROUGH ART AND SERVICE-LEARNING PROGRAMS.

Description

We need volunteers to help pack the art projects to be sent to teachers across the USA to help them teach empathy and kindness in their classrooms.

Since 2008, Children Mending Hearts has been dedicated to bringing an end to bullying and intolerance. Our nonprofit accomplishes this by teaching children about the concept of empathy. We inspire them to be positive change-makers through arts education and social-emotional learning.

Our results have been incredible. 91% of teachers using our programs say that their students have shown an increase in empathy and a decrease in bullying since the start of this year. But there are countless schools, many low-income/Title 1, who are on the waiting list for our programs.
