Summary:
Grocery Bringer volunteers with Bringing Justice Home will perform a variety of tasks to assist with reducing hunger and food insecurity in the Louisville area by delivering groceries and household supplies to neighbors* with special needs or who are medically vulnerable. Volunteering with Bringing Justice Home assumes a willingness to reach out to those unlike ourselves in a nonjudgmental, compassionate way.

Essential Duties, Responsibilities, and Expectations

(Note: All groceries and supplies will be paid for by Bringing Justice Home. You will provide your own transportation with no reimbursement.)

  • Making a monthly delivery to one or more neighbors as scheduled by the BJH Volunteer Coordinator
    • Currently, deliveries consist of picking up an order at Kroger and delivering it at a designated date and time to the neighbor.
    • Some deliveries are contact-free, but some neighbors need assistance carrying their groceries inside. The volunteer coordinator knows who these neighbors are, so if the volunteer is uncomfortable with having to go indoors, that is completely understandable, and we will give you another assignment.
  • Developing a personal connection with neighbor
  • Using active listening skills to support neighbor
  • Bringing any voiced or observed needs back to Bringing Justice Home Director for review
  • From time to time, shopping for and assembling one-time welcome bags

Requirements

  • Must have own transportation for shopping and/or delivery
  • Must have access to phone and computer/internet for communication, shopping lists, etc.
  • Must be able to lift bags or boxes of groceries and supplies and climb steps at homes/apartments or request to make deliveries without stairs or other challenging obstacles
  • Must be willing to serve those unlike ourselves without judgment.
  • Must have a heart for helping those who are struggling with food insecurity due to unemployment, age, illness, disability and other reasons.
  • Must be willing to serve one neighbor monthly. May serve more if desired.
  • Must maintain confidentiality (can share stories but not names, addresses, or other specifics).

Training

Training will consist of a video meeting with the Volunteer Coordinator to review details of the job. This will include a review of our non-discrimination policy, mission and vision, as well as job duties. There will also be a series of online modules to complete. Volunteer Coordinator and board are always available for questions and support.

Time Commitment

  • Once a month for approximately two hours per neighbor served.
  • Approximately 30 minutes per online training module; there are four modules total. Volunteers may complete the first module in order to get started more quickly, and then they will have 30 days to complete the rest of them.

Please note: We will require two references and will do a background check to ensure the safety of all involved.

*Bringing Justice Home uses the word neighbor to refer to the people we serve, denoting that we are all equals.
