NUMBER OF POSITIONS AVAILABLE: 3

LENGTH OF POSITION: Flexible

HOURS PER WEEK: (Please give a range, 1-5, 5-10, 10+, etc.). Up to 20 hours per week

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY: Harm reduction volunteers will work closely with harm reduction counselors, the program supervisor, and program participants to provide essential services and education to people who use drugs and people who do sex work.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Volunteers are responsible for working as part of a team to provide resources and education to people who inject drugs, emphasizing HIV prevention and other forms of risk reduction. They will assist counselors and the supervisor in office duties, outreach and community engagement efforts, and in building a welcoming environment for all Program participants.

Volunteers can expect to learn about harm reduction philosophies, build strong community relationships, and to engage with others in rewarding and dynamic ways.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge about substance use and sex work and/or willingness to learn about them.
  • Ability to work with others, especially people who have experienced/are experiencing oppression and/or discrimination based on their racial or gender identities and stigmatized behaviors.
  • Willingness to learn and practice COVID-19 safety protocols while performing street and mobile outreach, packaging supplies, and interacting with other staff and Program participants.
  • Confidence in doing many different job tasks and working in a fluctuating environment.
  • Desire to learn about harm reduction, HIV, Hepatitis C, and STI prevention, and drug user activism.
  • People who are bilingual and/or bicultural are strongly encouraged to apply!

Throughout the past three decades, Tapestry Health has been a leader in providing high quality, caring health services and advocacy for the people of western Massachusetts. Started in 1973 as the Family Planning Council of Western Massachusetts, the agency changed its name in 1998 to better reflect the diversity of services the agency provides. Today, in addition to family planning and reproductive health care, Tapestry Health provides HIV/AIDS services, needle exchange and harm reduction services, WIC nutritional services, outreach, education, and other community services to over 50,000 people each year in communities across the Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden, and Hampshire counties.
