Who are the Mediators?

A mediator is a community volunteer who is trained to help the citizens of Norman reach a resolution to their dispute. As a mediator you will be a neutral third party that helps those in conflict define issues, explore solutions and reach a practical, workable and mutually satisfactory agreement.

Education: No Degree required.
Experience: Life experience required

Mission Statement

To serve the needs of citizens of the City of Norman through the operation of a certified mediation program as outlined in the Dispute Resolution Act, 12 O.S. 1801, et seq by offering Norman citizens an alternative manner by which to resolve disputes before they reach the stage of general litigation or criminal charges.

Description

Early Settlement - Norman has been an active program since April 1998 and a member of the Alternative Dispute Resolution System of the State of Oklahoma since June 14, 1988.

The program is designed to allow the parties involved in conflict to address their disputes and develop resolutions that are practical, workable and mutually satisfactory to the parties in order to promote a more peaceful community. Conflicts include nuisance animal, property disputes, simple assault and battery, trespassing and disturbing the peace.

While the Program primarily focuses on misdemeanor charges that have been referred by the Norman Municipal Court, the program also receives referrals from other City agencies, Norman Board of Realtors and individual citizens

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be at least 18
  • Orientation or Training
  • 20 hours of initial mediator training. 10 hours of program sponsored service as a mediator or co-mediator per fiscal year.
  • Mediation is held on Monday at 5:00pm. You would be required to mediate no less than 5 times a year.
