Adopt a Park - Priority Lead

Mission

By working to maintain clean and beautiful parks we are promoting sustainable communities and providing valuable outdoor spaces for native plants and animals and supporting the well-being of those living within the community.

Role Purpose

  • Preserve and protect our parks and park ecosystems
  • Support native plants and animals in parks through invasive species monitoring and removal
  • Maintain the beauty of our parks for community members to enjoy
  • Provide opportunities for environmental education and public outreach through our events and projects as added value for our volunteers

Responsibilities

  • Park Clean Ups (Currently Bi-monthly)
    • Before Clean Ups
      • Confirm date and location with City contacts
      • Reach out to new and existing contacts to recruit volunteers
      • Ensure that we have all the necessary supplies for the cleanup
      • Order tools from the Phoenix Community ToolBank, if needed, and pick up the day before the cleanup
    • During Clean Ups
      • Give an introduction of the park and AZSA to all volunteers, and include a safety briefing
      • Take pictures or make sure we have a designated person in charge of photos
      • Interact with volunteers to talk more about AZSA, answer questions, and make sure everyone is having fun!
    • After Clean Ups
      • Send out thank you emails to strategic groups present
      • Record volunteer names and emails into Google Drive
      • Email a summary to the Parks contacts with # of volunteers, names, and specific groups present
      • Share pictures and a summary of the event on AZSA social media

  • Invasive Species Mapping Team- Desert Defenders
    • AZSA is working with the Central Arizona Conservation Alliance to recruit volunteers to join the Desert Defenders. This is a group of citizen scientists who use the GIS mobile app Collector to identify and map locations of invasive plants within the Phoenix Parks and Preserves.
    • Schedule new training sessions for volunteers
    • Check in with trained volunteers to answer questions and make sure they are still using the app regularly
    • Schedule and lead hiking days for everyone to meet up and map invasive species together
  • Oversee Project Coordinator for the Penny Howe Trail Restoration Project
  • Speak at New Volunteer Orientations about the Adopt-a-Park Priority
  • As needed, help with tabling events, fundraisers, meetings, etc.
  • Decide on suitable strategies and objectives as they relate to the priority and the larger organization. Vet the strategies with organizational leadership to ensure alignment and appropriate focus.

Ideal Skill Set

  • Interested in parks, environmental science, conservation, and sustainability
  • Working knowledge of program/project management software (Basecamp, Trello, MS Project etc.)
  • Outstanding leadership and organizational skills; you are a relationship builder who "manages by influence"
  • Willing to work on weekends
  • Comfortable speaking in front of a group and leading volunteers
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; a highly collaborative work style
  • Reliable and accountable

Time commitment: Approximately 5-10 Hours Per Week
