Big Couples Mentor
ORGANIZATION: Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver
Please visit the new page to apply.
(We welcome gender diverse couples, including transgender and gender-fluid, and couples of all sexual orientation.)
Couples who are cohabitating, married or living common law who wish to volunteer together can be matched with a mentee through our Big Couples Mentoring Program (an extension of the One-to-One Community Based Mentoring Program). This program is designed for couples who wish to make a difference in the life of a child who needs a mentor and can benefit from an additional friendship in their life.
Couples are required to spend approximately 2 to 4 hours once a week in outings with their Little Brother, for a minimum of 6 months. During the outings, the Little and couple will do fun and enriching activities around the city that will help develop their mentoring relationship. The mentee will benefit from not only one but also two mentors as role models, which will ensure greater social and community experiences and connections.
Each partner in the couple must be over 20 years old, in their relationship for at least two years and have lived together for at least six months.
Both partners must apply and meet the volunteer requirements of the Community Program.
Individual volunteer applications are required, and each partner must indicate their interest in Couples Mentoring, along with their partner’s name on the application.
All it takes is 2-4 hours each week and a minimum six-month commitment to the program. Develop new skills, try out new activities and be a role model. Some of the activities Big and Little like do to are:
- Cycling
- Soccer
- Arts and crafts
- Mini golf
- Listening to music
- Cooking
- Reading
Check out our Facebook and Instagram pages (@BigBrothersYVR) which cite the experience of many of our volunteers.
