Berks Sinfonietta is a 501(c)(3) chamber orchestra that serves the Reading and Berks County communities. We strive to make great classical music accessible for all generations. The orchestra has adopted an inter-generational mentoring approach to both our music-making and community education. To learn more visit our website at www.berkssinfonietta.org

During the COVID pandemic, Berks Sinfonietta produced a monthly digital concert series (14 performances) that allowed us to safely operate and continue bringing great music to our audience. That audience has grown in size and has embraced our virtual format. For that reason, we offer live-streams of our in-person concerts and educational programming. Please visit our YouTube channel to see examples of our past work at https://www.youtube.com/c/BerksSinfonietta

We are seeking passionate, engaged board members who want to help us grow and expand our financial foundation, thus allowing us to reach even more new audiences in our community and beyond.

Our board is a combination of volunteer work and fundraising. We are specifically seeking hands-on types that have any of the below skills:

Individual Fundraising and Donor Relationships : This individual has demonstrated experience engaging with individual donors, sharing our impact, and encouraging repeat donations. This person would nurture our existing donor list as well as solicit new individual donors by forming personal relationships.

Corporate Fundraising and Sponsorships : This individual has demonstrated experience soliciting and securing corporate sponsorships and contributions. Ideally, they have existing relationships but are also skilled at forming them.

Volunteer Management: Volunteers help in every aspect of concert production, ranging from ticket-taking, distributing programs, serving as ushers, venue setup and take down, and even acting as stage manager. We are seeking an individual with demonstrated experience in organizing and managing volunteers, ensuring all required roles are filled before "showtime" and concerts can happen without a hitch.

Responsibilities

As a bona fide board member, you help set the strategic direction of Berks Sinfonietta. We constantly consider the changing demographics of Berks County and increasingly diverse audiences for classical music in Berks County. We are committed to building a better community by building programs that celebrate and sustain diversity and education. Members are expected to care for the organization and act accordingly at all times.

Berks Sinfonietta board members also:

  • Contribute financially at a level that is personally meaningful.
  • Attend all board meetings (held either in person or via Zoom).
  • Help recruit new board members within your network.
  • Support the orchestra by contributing expertise, professional or personal connections, or other means.
  • Attend performances, recruit audience members, and conduct other activities that introduce new individuals to our work.
  • Represent Berks Sinfonietta professionally and positively in all respects.

Currently, board members serve one-year terms with the possibility of re-election.

Location

We are a local nonprofit organization. Candidates from Reading or Berks County, Pennsylvania are strongly preferred. Because of the hands-on nature of the work, this position is not available on a remote basis.

Interested applicants should email James Gilmer, Board Vice President at info@berkssinfonietta.org

Berks Sinfonietta is an equal opportunity employer. All applicants will be considered for employment without attention to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran or disability status.

Mission Statement

Berks Sinfonietta was established in 2014 as a group made up of local musicians, dedicated to exploring the vast repertoire of all periods. One of its distinguishing characteristics is an intergenerational approach, where young professionals, advanced students and gifted amateurs come together to learn from one another and to create performances of excellence. We also intend to explore various aspects of performance practice, and to build a new audience for classical music through education and outreach.

Description

Berks Sinfonietta is a nonprofit chamber orchestra established in 2014. We perform 6-8 live concerts annually in various venues in the Reading and Berks County community. In 2019, we served approximately 75 local professional musicians, 75 high school and college-age musicians, and 1,000 audience members. Audiences love hearing new and unfamiliar classical music that they can't hear anywhere else! We perform music from all eras and are dedicated to performing pieces by non-white, living, and female composers on an equal and regular basis. Led by Artistic Director Dr. David McConnell, Berks Sinfonietta performs at a high level of artistry and musical excellence.
