The Arc Minnesota is a non-profit, grassroots advocacy organization serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. Intellectual and developmental disabilities include Down syndrome, autism, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy and related conditions. The Arc helps people address issues such as early intervention, education, transition to adulthood, employment, housing, health care, guardianship, transportation, supports available to families/caregivers and on policy issues at local, state and national levels.
Position Summary: Directly supports The Arc’s Program and Services team. Participates in the planning & implementation of activities and advocacy efforts positively impacting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This intern supports The Arc’s general advocacy work around a variety of life topics such as guardianship, informed decision making, employment and planning services just to name a few. Provides administrative, logistical, project management, and/or evaluative support in collaboration and under supervision of The Arc’s staff. Specific duties include:
Advocacy Responsibilities:
- Support outreach efforts to inform individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families, about services and resources available at The Arc Minnesota
- Create and/or disseminate information on a variety of topics to inform and educate individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities related to topics.
- Provide information and advocacy related to guardianship and informed decision making; includes answering calls, providing information and assistance, giving presentations and connecting with the community
- Provide information and advocacy related to employment for persons with disabilities; includes answering calls, providing information and assistance and assisting in developing The Arc’s plan for employment involvement
- Conduct outreach into the community to share The Arc’s resources by hosting booths at community events and informing community members about The Arc’s services and supports
- Assist individuals with disabilities and their families as it relates to planning services; includes supporting person centered planners with graphic facilitation at meetings with families and by aiding in person centered plan editing and writing
- Provide training in the community around Healthy Relationships for persons with disabilities
- Provide administrative, logistical, programmatic and/or evaluative support to program and services team on a variety of topics impacting the disability community as needed
- Creation of Health Care Access guides informing individuals how the public health care option works
- Other duties as requested
Includes a $2000 stipend payable in August or the utilization of work-study if eligible. Summer 2020 at 10-14 hours per week. Hours are Monday-Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm with occasional evenings and weekends.
