Volunteers will work one-on-one with residents at the Farmer's Market to provide a quick check to see if they are eligible for SNAP. This screening involves asking brief questions about someone’s income, household size, and expenses using an online tool. Pre-screeners also refer people to application assistance with staff, and answer basic questions about SNAP services and other food resources.
Volunteers will have the support of Hunger Free America staff and GrowNYC market managers. This role is ideal for someone who is outgoing, friendly, and patient; works well independently; comfortable talking to people they don’t know about sensitive topics; supports the mission to eliminate food insecurity in NYC . Must be at least 18 years old. Additional language skills in Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Bengali, Arabic, or other languages are beneficial.
All volunteers must commit to a minimum of 2 months of volunteering and go through our SNAP 101 virtual training and attend one in person orientation/Q&A session at the Hunger Free America offices located in downtown Manhattan.

Description
HUNGER FREE AMERICA (formerly known as the New York City Coalition Against Hunger) is a national nonprofit group building a nonpartisan, grass-roots membership movement to enact the policies and programs needed to end domestic hunger and ensure that all Americans have sufficient access to nutritious food.
Our long-term goal is not just to ameliorate the problem, but also to build the people’s movement necessary to enact the economic and public policies needed to end hunger entirely. Given that hunger drains our economy and tears at our moral and civic fabric, we know that eliminating it will boost the nation both economically and spiritually. Towards that end, we’ve adopted the motto: "Ending hunger lifts us all."
