ORGANIZATION: The Rosewood Initiative

As people residing in the Portland area, we navigate various systems, forms, and phone lines daily to pay our bills, apply for services, and take care of ourselves and our families.

Often for folks who are new to Portland and the United States, especially folks who have limited English, these everyday tasks are much harder. They can face barriers like difficulty understanding the questions on forms and trouble navigating automated phone lines.

Refugee and Immigrant Hospitality Outreach (RIHO) is looking for volunteers who have daytime availability within Monday-Thursday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and are willing to be available to help RIHO community members navigate paperwork, phone lines, and the internet to accomplish simple tasks like calling PGE, checking their spot in line for Section 8 housing, and navigating various resources available to Rosewood and the surrounding community.

This is a new opportunity for us, and we don't have a set schedule yet for volunteer shifts. If you are available on Monday mornings or Wednesday afternoons, that would be ideal, but we can set up shifts outside of those hours, as well.

Refugee and Immigrant Hospitality Outreach (RIHO) facilitates social connections and access to services for refugees and immigrants. We bring American volunteers and newcomers together through social and educational activities with a goal of making friends and building community, and partner with different organizations to assist the adjustment to a new life here.

Since building community is the main part of our mission, we are looking for folks who could commit to volunteering at least twice per month.

Mission Statement

Building a safe, healthy and vibrant community where neighbors can thrive together.

Description

The Rosewood Initiative is a nonprofit community-based organization that has been implementing neighbor-led strategies since 2009. Our community center, Rosewood, provides space for people to gather, connect to resources, celebrate, and work on projects that improve their lives and the community. As we grow our impact, we are making transformational change to the conditions in the community that make it possible for everyone to thrive.

Rosewood is a beautiful community and one of the most diverse places in the State of Oregon. It is home to more than 14,000 people from all over the world, people that are strong, resilient, talented, inspiring, and full of dreams and potential. We also know that Rosewood neighbors are struggling. The area has a high concentration of poverty, high crime, unsafe streets and inadequate public transit, parks, and other amenities. Schools in the Rosewood area are struggling with external factors they cannot control and early childhood services are lacking. Education and health outcomes fall below the regional averages. There are few local jobs and businesses to serve neighborhood needs. Many buildings, both commercial and residential, are neglected and in poor condition. Our neighbors generally have fewer opportunities to live a high quality of life compared with people in other areas of the Portland Metro region.
