To facilitate social connections and access to services for newcomers from all nations and backgrounds in the Gresham/East Portland area.
RIHO exists to help local refugees and immigrants bridge isolating cultural and language barriers, so they can thrive and feel at home in their new community. We bring people from the existing American culture together with refugees and immigrants to create a compassionate community that welcomes, assists and learns from one another. With an attitude of cultural humility, we invite volunteers and partners to be a welcoming presence in the community where the felt needs of newcomers are met and friendships are formed.
This happens at our Welcome Centers, where there is space for relationships to be built, tea to be enjoyed, and resources to be shared. We offer ESL classes and tutoring, homework help for school-aged children, and other services as needed, such as studying for the written driver's test or applying for a food handler's card. Many of the refugees and volunteers who come to our center say they feel like family with one another.
