Food Recovery Volunteer in Escondido

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: ProduceGood

40% of all food goes to waste, and 1 in 3 people in San Diego County is food insecure. Join other volunteers of all ages to glean (pick) fruit in backyard orchards for people in need. Together, we will help address the problem of hunger and waste in one sweet step.

Enjoy a fragrant Tuesday morning gleaning fruit trees at various residential North County groves from 9am - 12pm. This seasonal volunteer position picks fruit December through the end of July. Approximately 25 volunteers of all ages yield a minimum of 800 pounds of fruit-often much more! A major distribution agency, such as San Diego Food Bank or Feeding San Diego, drops off the totes in advance and then transports the bounty back to their headquarters for distribution to their food pantries located throughout the county. Volunteers are asked to wear sturdy shoes as well as bring a water bottle, and will be provided with necessary equipment and orientation at pick location.
