The Vermont Wing of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is looking for Recruiting and Retention Officers, and Assistant Recruiting and Retention Officers to become part of our volunteer , non-profit organization, chartered by Congress as the United States Air Force Auxiliary.
Do you have a desire to volunteer and serve your community a few days a month? Do you have an interest in becoming part of a Search & Rescue organization that saves numerous lives every year throughout the United States? As a volunteer with CAP you can participate in Search and Rescue (SAR) missions; Search and Rescue Exercises (SAREX’s); and disaster relief efforts as part of the Auxiliary to the United States Air Force. Our organization also coordinates and works with other disaster relief and governmental organizations such as the Department of Homeland Security, DoD, FEMA and Vermont Emergency Management.
Recruiting and Retention Officers, and Assistant Recruiting and Retention Officers perform the following duties:
- Formulate plans and establishes policies, procedures, and programs, designed to assist CAP in attracting new members and retaining current members.
- Plan and conduct periodic membership drives and open houses to attract new members and to stimulate interest in current inactive members.
- Make presentations to outside groups, both youth and adult, to attract new members.
- Place posters and other recruiting materials in strategic locations advertising local meeting times and places.
- Stage display booths and provide recruiting coverage at local high schools, shopping centers, air shows, and other public events.
- Personally contact individuals expressing an interest in CAP by telephone, written inquiry, etc., and follow up to ensure that all interested persons are fully informed on the CAP program and local unit activities.
If you’re up for the task, CAP offers non-military citizens stimulating training opportunities few people outside of the military can experience. Our volunteer members continuously train to acquire the life-saving and Emergency Services skills necessary to assist Federal and State humanitarian agencies, Emergency Management agencies for when disasters strike, and to participate in search and rescue missions.
The following local squadrons are in need of Recruiting and Retention Officers, and Assistant Recruiting and Retention Officersand are constantly training and preparing their members for the skills necessary to provide Emergency Services to the public in a time of need:
- The Burlington Senior Squadron. This Squadron generally meets the first Wednesday of each month from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at 355 Valley Rd, South Burlington, VT 05403. Contact: Peter Slocombe at firstname.lastname@example.org. The meeting is at our Head Quarters at the end of Valley Rd., on the second floor of the Hangar also used by the Vermont Flight Academy. Our door is the left-hand entrance. It is kept locked; so you must ring the bell or call the number on the door. (Someone will come down and let you in.)
- The Capital Composite Squadron. This Squadron generally meets every Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m., at the CAP hangar at the Knapp State Airport in Barre. 2081 Airport Rd Berlin Barre VT. Contact: Richard Beach at 802-595-3793 or email@example.com.

- The Southern Vermont Senior Squadron. This Squadron generally meets every Tuesday at 5:15 p.m., at the Bennington Airport, 1563 Walloomsac Rd., Bennington, VT. Contact: Arthur Doxsee at 802-345-3998 or email@example.com.
While the central purpose of this ad is to find Recruiting and Retention Officers, and Assistant Recruiting and Retention Officers, the focus of our efforts are in the training and preparation of Aircrew and Ground Team Members for the Vermont Wing. As such, there are numerous roles available to non-flying members, such as radio communications, logistics, planning, and mission staff participation.
We invite and welcome you to be a guest at one of our regular squadron meetings. One of our members will give you a tour of the facility before or after the meeting. You will also have a chance to meet some of our members who will discuss the organization and provide you with valuable information, as well as answer any questions you might have about CAP.
- Strong organizational skills, people and communication skills.
- Aged 18 or older.
- Willingness to become a member of the Civil Air Patrol.
- Ability to pass a background check.
- Enthusiasm for community service.

CAP is made up 52 wings (the 50 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia). The Vermont Wing executes CAP missions primarily in Vermont, and adjacent states, but members can go anywhere in the nation to serve on CAP missions such as hurricane response or cadet encampments.
The Vermont Wing offers exciting opportunities to individuals of all ages. We are headquartered in South Burlington with squadrons in Springfield, Rutland, Bennington, Montpelier, and South Burlington. Some squadrons have only senior members (ages 18 +), while others are composite with cadet members (ages 12 - 21) along with senior members who train and mentor cadets.
- We supported Vermont Air National Guard providing airborne communications relays and targets for the jet pilots to train in intercepting low- and slow-flying aircraft.
- Conducted four searches for overdue airplanes, coordinating aircraft and ground crews.
- Participated in a large search and rescue and communications training exercise with the Vermont State Police Ground Team.
- Provided aerospace and STEM education in state technology education centers, elementary, middle and high school campuses.
- Our cadets benefited from powered and glider orientation flights. They participated in Wreaths Across America observations to honor the nation’s fallen patriots, and provided color party at parades, Lake Monster games, and more.
